Build Your Own Search Strings

You are assigned a research paper and decide to write about eating disorders. To get some general information on the topic you need to write queries to locate articles in a general database.  For each of the numbered assignments below:
  1. Define variables for your search terms.
  2. Write the search using Boolean operators (/\, \/ ~).
  3. Write the database search string for that topic (and, or and not )
  4. Hand in paper assignment: Draw a Venn Diagram for each and label the hits in the region corresponding to the search.
  1. As you do your research you realize that this is a problem among girls as young as eight and among women of all ages. Locate articles that discuss the problem in either group.
  2. You decide that you to fully cover the topic you need marerial that deals with both groups in the same articles. Locate those articles.
  3. In doing your reading, you notice that eating disorders do not only affect women, and decide to find some articles about the topic that do not include girls or women.
To make sure you have done all you can, you do a last search on the subject that eliminates articles that have any thing about girls and women. Write the database search string that will give you those results.

Parts a, b and c for each of the above is to be posted on the blog http://glassrmat101/wordpress.com
